Fork in a forest path: choosing between two roads

fide or CILS, CELI, PLIDA: Which Italian Certificate Do You Need in Switzerland?

🇮🇹 Leggi questo articolo in italiano

“I already have a CILS certificate: is it enough for my settlement permit in Switzerland?” It is one of the questions I hear most often from people living in Switzerland who study Italian. The short answer is: it depends, and it’s worth understanding why before registering for an exam.

When you need the fide test

If you must prove your Italian to the Swiss authorities – for the C settlement permit, naturalisation or family reunification – the reference is the fide test. The authorities also accept some recognised language certificates: before registering for an Italian exam, check the official list on fide-service.ch and confirm with your cantonal migration office.

When you need CILS, CELI or PLIDA

If your goal concerns Italy – enrolling at an Italian university, applying for Italian citizenship, working in Italy – you need one of the official Italian certifications. The fide test has no value for the Italian authorities.

For a CV that works across Europe, a certificate such as CILS, CELI or PLIDA is also generally better known.

Can you have both?

Of course, and it is quite common for people who live in Switzerland but have ties with Italy (work, family, a home). Many of my students prepare for the fide test first, for the nearest deadline, and later for a higher-level Italian certification. The skills you build for one also help with the other.

Three questions to decide

  1. Who is asking for the certificate? A Swiss office → fide. A university, employer or Italian office → CILS, CELI or PLIDA.
  2. Which level do you need? fide goes up to B1; if you need B2 or C1, choose an Italian certification.
  3. What’s your nearest deadline? Start from that one.
